In retailing nothing stays the same for long, our customers’ needs are also changing too, anticipating and fulfilling these is a real skill.

Whether you’re working in General Merchandise or in our Food areas; customers are at the heart of what we do.

In General Merchandise, we cover a range of products which appeal to so many different customers – from the latest toy “craze” to funky tableware to eco-friendly light bulbs! We work as one team to bring great products to our customers. We aim to serve our customers in-store and online, to give them a streamlined shopping experience, with products and ranges they love, at prices and quality they trust. We need to know our customers and understand what they love; which is why we work hard to develop our ranges, working with some of the most recognised global brands to get what’s right for our new and loyal customers. Our Food business remains the most important part of what we offer customers every day. Within Food, our team aim to serve Britain’s shoppers a little better every day by making great quality food accessible to our customer’s every day! We cover everything from working with local producers through to global sourcing. Every day offers a different challenge as we focus on our shared passion of offering fantastic quality, innovation and value for money. The way our customers shop is changing so we have structured our Food teams to ensure we can lead the way in the new world of multichannel retailing. Our teams of experts work to ensure our customers get exactly what they want.

On our Commercial Operations Internship, you will be working within the teams that look after our products. You could be in one of our Buying, Merchandising or Customer teams, helping to build compelling and innovative ranges and ensuring we have quality prducts for our customers, when they need them and at the best price.

These teams all have an important role to play across our Food and General Merchandise areas and no matter where you are placed you will be able to grow your commercial skills.

Some of the areas you could be involved in on our Commercial Internship include:

  • Home & Seasonal
  • Toys, Nursery, Recreation & Stationary
  • Electrical & Entertainment
  • Fresh Food
  • Packaged Food
  • Household, Health and Beauty

Our customers and all our colleagues around the world will be relying on the decisions you make. You can give us the edge by choosing the right suppliers, getting the best value and quality, and having great availability in store and online.

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing your product out there and our customers choosing and enjoying items from the range that you have created!

The summer will give you the support network, environment and training you need to get stuck in from day one. Our on the job learning should help you develop your commercial and leadership skills in one of our General Merchandise or Food teams.

Our Buying teams are responsible for developing and sourcing great product ranges, as well as making key decisions. They work hand in hand with our merchandisers, marketing teams, technologists and suppliers to ensure they deliver precisely what our customers want, at a price they love.

Our Merchandising teams are a crucial part of the process of the product journey and deliver the ranges to the right locations, on time and on budget. Merchandising is a highly proactive and strategic area of the business which requires agile thinking, analysis and keeping customer needs at the forefront of what they do.

Our Customer teams use insight to drive our overall strategy for our commercial teams, ensuring we have a great offer and great promotions across our ranges.

From promoting our toy range to developing stock plans for your area, there's plenty to get stuck into. And things move lightning fast. We waste no time sourcing and developing own-branded products, buying from leading brands, and analysing the results. So you get to do a bit of everything.

You could get involved in defining what we sell, where we get it from and at what price. You’ll start to see how even the smallest decision affects our stores, our suppliers and our business as a whole. We do our best to improve prices for our customers by working in ever-closer partnership with suppliers and growers.

While you spend your summer immersed in all this, we help you get to know your strengths. We give you leadership training, send you on development days and provide a great support network – you get a buddy, a mentor, and a director as your sponsor.
